Guess who’s going to grace the FIFA 08 cover? It’s none other than two-time FIFA World Player of the Year, Ronaldinho! Electronic Arts announced this bit of news and said that the much awaited franchise game title from EA Sports will be available this Fall for the Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Nintendo DS, PC and mobile platforms.

But, Ronaldinho will not be the only one on the FIFA 08 cover, as he is slated to be alongside other star players from other select teams worldwide.

Ronaldinho will join 2006 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner Miroslav Klose of Werder Bremen on the FIFA 08 packaging in Germany; rising star Sergio Ramos of Real Madris on the cover in Spain; attacking midfielder and captain of the Austrian national team Andreas Ivanschitz of Panathinaikos FC on the cover in Austria, and Swiss national Tranquillo Barnetta of Bayer Leverkusen on the packaging of Switzerland. Midfielder Florent Malouda of Olympique Lyonnais and winger Frank Ribery of Olympique Marseille will be paired with Ronaldinho on FIFA 08 covers in France. Those athletes appearing ob the FIFA 08 cover in North America and U.K will be revealed next month.


Now, the FIFA 08 game will be more realistic than ever. EA has revealed that most of the cover stars are participating in state-of-the-art body motion capture at a private facility in Barcelona, Spain. Their body movements, individual movies and playing styles are being captured, digitized and will soon become the life-like movement of the virtual players in future versions of EA’s FIFA games.

The fans of the trendy Command & Conquer series (and this refers to the official Commander& Conquer series) have required a lot of patience. It has been quiet around the Brotherhood of NOD and the Global Defensive Initiative (GDI) after the Tiberian Sun and its add-on “Firestorm” since 1999. Now after 7 years of silence, the two stalwart wranglers reappear in public.

Welcome back, Commander

Who would have thought Kane lives! The charismatic leader of the Brotherhood of NOD has returned in order to win the war for Tiberium and world domination for himself. GDI has downgraded the danger level, which emanated from NOD, to “low“ on the basis of the alleged death of Kane. It is presumed, that the Brotherhood will destroy itself slowly through the internal struggles for power. However at the beginning of the game NOD succeeds in blasting the orbiting command station Philadelphia, the headquarters of the GDI, and with it all the senior most generals of the world police. The chaos is perfect. The hierarchy of GDI collapses; no one knows exactly what to do. The fate of the world lies in our hands.

Home, sweet home

One can decide between two campaigns in the Main Menu. You can either finally release the world (whoever believes that will be blessed) from the Brotherhood of NOD in a 17-part campaign or you support Kane’s relentless thirst for power and move on the side of the Brotherhood in another 17 missions against the much detested GDI.

A novelty, which would bring tears to the eyes of some C&C veterans, the game has been extended to bring in a third group (Scrin). An extraterrestrial race, which also wishes to conquer Tiberium. The campaign of the Scrin can be started only after the campaign of GDI and NOD have been concluded and contains 4 missions.

The campaigns run parallel to one another as is the case in all Command & Conquer Series. As a player you have to free the White House from the clutches of the Brotherhood together with GDI, whereas under Kane’s command you have to capture the White House.

Made new from old!

C&C Fans will feel at home immediately when they start the first mission and see the usual construction bar on the right edge of the screen. There have been no basic changes in the controls in the strategy epos. The tried and tested features were retained, and a few new but practical features have been added.

Thus for example the surveyor on the side of GDI. Those are units, which allow us to expand our base over the normal zone around the builder’s yard. Very useful, with the discovery of a Tiberium field, which should be scoured without having to undergo the long travelling hours of the collector. And here we would arrive at a small weakness of Command & Conquer 3.

The collectors.....We know the situation only too well from the two predecessors (Tiberium conflict and Tiberian Sun), in which our Tiberium harvester clumsily drives in an area occupied by the enemy and under bombardment works at peaceful dismantling. There has been no changes in Tiberium Wars in this either.

The AI faces old familiar problems. Thus it can happen that the adversaries simply ignore the fact that a building has to be destroyed. So units face obstacles, instead of running around them.

Even the much promised flexibility of the AI is not available on any of the 3 perceptible levels of difficulty. So we were able to take an enemy base apart without problems with a number of mammoth tankers, while the adversary tried to force our tanks to flee with foot soldiers. A rather sad venture. This does not mean that the game is tactically undemanding. The missions are all established on a good fair tactical level.

Exciting as always

The presentation of Command & Conquer 3 fulfils all wishes. The interim sequences played with real actors are shown wonderfully in the scene and are a continuous motivation from one mission to the next. Unfortunately the synchronization into German is not that good. Actors talk without moving their lips, or move their lips without saying anything. In the case of politicians that is nothing new, but we are used to better service from the C&C series. We recommend urgently that you buy the Kane Edition (uncut and multilingual -> install in English). Otherwise an essential part of the atmosphere of the treasured interim sequences is lost by the “nerving factor”.

EA has succeeded very well with the design of the mission. We can build up our base in a mission and will regularly receive reinforcements, while we have to escort our construction vehicle under the most severe bombardment to a practically broken base for reconstruction.

Ambush or direct attack?

The 3 groups bring credible differences with it. Whereas GDI attacks with strongly armored units, NOD lies in ambush with camouflaged though week armored units. The Scrin on the other hand has a teleportation of its own and the intellectual control of enemy units. All in all it is a successful mixture.

The balancing has not been developed so completely as is normal in Command & Conquer. So Scrin is a bit to strong and the avatars of NOD, when they are well-equipped, difficult to beat. Besides the AI in the single player mode is somewhat unfair, when every second foot soldiers waddle out of he barracks. We are convinced that EA will repair this with a patch.

Multiplayer

Even Multiplayer friends get their money’s worth. With maximal 8 comrades you could make the 20 (in the normal edition) given cards unsafe. With the excellent graphic engine the switches 1 A appear and make each game an experience. The balancing difficulties of the single player campaign does not effect the multiplayer part of the game. Thus Scrin can teleport without an effort in the enemy basis and even the defense towers of the rivals are not obstacles for the Scrin, thanks to the distance attack possibility of their units. Here a patch should be of assistance!

Start the game with a simple 32 tile board and 3 'Lives'. If you complete a board, you move to a bigger one! If you fail to complete a board, the tiles spring back and you lose a 'Life'. The 'Easy' level takes you through 8 levels with 144 tiles on the final board. The 'Hard' level takes you up to a huge 172 tile board!

The game has a visual style that perfectly combines realism and playability. The result is one of the best looking Mahjong games available, and it's a joy to play! The game uses a unique random board generator that produces new and interesting boards every time you play. With literally millions of different layouts, every game offers a different challenge!

“You’re supposed to be working, not watching TV”. I had to put up with this phrase all week. It wasn’t because of the recently purchased TV card, as some cynics might say, but Codemasters latest rally racing title, Colin McRae Dirt, that was to blame.

Dirt never looked so good

You should be warned in advance, that the first few races in Colin McRae Dirt will most likely be difficult. Not because it is complicated to maneuver, or because the car physics are too “realistic”. You will probably be too busy admiring the awesome graphics, and forget to watch the road. Codemasters latest development, the “Neon-Engine”, makes up for their past shortcomings. The cars in Colin McRae always looked good, but the landscape and audience graphics lagged way behind their major competitors.

Name change?

You guessed it! Colin McRae is taking a new direction. This is apparent in the title of the series spin-off. “Rally” and the year were always used as the title, and now it’s simply called DIRT. This is meant to emphasize the new multifaceted Colin McRae. The new game offers off-road races in addition to the ever-popular rally disciplines. Alongside the American CORR Championships with dune buggies, pick-up trucks and Rallycross, there are also Rally Raid, Crossover and Hill-Climb circuits in the career pyramid.

Like we said before, in the CORR Championship you drive dune buggies and pickup trucks on gritty, sandy circuits against an A.I. opponent, and in the Hill-Climb you must navigate grueling mountainous terrain. As always, the clock is ticking. The whole Colin McRae package is rounded off nicely with the Rally Raid (racing on sandy hills with super-charged monster machines), the Rallycross track (circuit with eight other opponents) and the Crossover (circuit with one opponent).

The career pyramid

Pro racers and amateurs will both have fun with the career pyramid mode. It lets you participate in a many different types of races as soon as possible. To move up to the next level of the pyramid, you have to rake in points and money. You accomplish this by running as many races as possible and achieving at least one spot on the podium. Depending on the chosen level of difficulty, the winnings will pay out more (pro) or less (amateur) cash. The point distribution remains the same, which is fair. If the career mode isn’t your thing, you can still put your driving skills to the test in the individual races, or in a separate championship.

That is no easy feat, either. Not at the “pro” level, at least. If even the slightest mistake is made, your opponents will react so fiercely that your little ponies won’t know what hit them. If you’re not careful, you run the risk of a total write-off. Beginners, on the other hand, are given the opportunity to experience the glories of success at the amateur level. Hats off to Colin McRae. This game really has something for everyone.

It’s really hard to miss the car physics as well. They are not as realistic as in Richard Burns Rally for example, but they still make a good impression. Codemasters has managed to find the mid point between corny arcade style, and challenging race simulation games.

Pimp my ride

Colin McRae Dirt has something for motor heads, too. You can tinker with just about every nut and bolt of your ride. Tuning your car has a realistic impact on your driving capabilities, so it could be worth your while to do a test run of the track before the actual race, and tweak your vehicle according the track conditions. If you don’t have a clue about tuning cars, don’t worry. The standard settings are so good, that you can still win every race without having to tinker. It may be after the second start, though.
